Karel has spent two decades reading professionally — for festivals, for funds, and for producers deciding what to make. That is the part that matters when you are paying for judgement: not that someone liked your script, but that someone knows what happens to it in the room where it gets passed on, and can tell you which of its problems are the ones that will get it passed on.

How he reads
Once at reading pace, the way a reader at a fund or a festival would, because the first impression is the one your script will actually get. Then again with a pen. The notes are handwritten in the margin before any of them are typed, which is why the report quotes your draft back at you instead of talking in general terms about structure.
The report ranks its findings. Everything in it is numbered so that the call has something to point at, and the whole document opens with the single job that comes before the others — because a list of twenty problems is not notes, it is a mood.
